The Traditional Yoga Association

The TYA was founded by Swami Ambikananda Saraswati & Brahmacharins Uddhava Samman & Manisha Wilmette to continue the teachings of traditional yoga as articulated by Swami Venkatesananda. while yoga has no particular founder it has an ancient tradition that has been handed down though the sacred texts of India, & from guru to disciple, over millennia. In this tradition Yoga is a philosophy, a science, an art & practices that lead the individual to an understanding of self & a state of universal consciousness in which the self is fully revealed.

"Yoga is all those practices that enable you to discover health - which is not an absence of the symptoms of sickness, but which is wholeness & holiness ... an inner state of being in which there is no division at all."

Swami Ambikananda Saraswati began her spiritual studies at the age of twenty, when she met the guru Swami Venkatesananda, the world-renowned Himalayan monk. For the next twelve years, he trained her in Yoga and Vedanta, encouraging her to study the inner meaning of Sanskrit scriptures by seeking their spiritual truths. This became the basis of her method of interpretive translation and teaching of philosophy, meditation and Yoga. In 1998, on the banks of the Ganges in Rishikesh, India, Swami Ambikananda was initiated into the ancient order of Saraswati by Swami Chidananda Maharaja, President of the Divine Life Society. She is also an acupuncturist and herbalist, and founder of the Traditional Yoga Association (based in the UK).
